Draft Workshop January 21, 2010

1. What was the original plan for your blog’s tone? Do you think this post captures that done? Do any parts seem inconsistent? Which ones?

2. Will your post include multimedia content (pictures, video, etc.)? What is the purpose of this content? Is this content drawing your reader’s attention to your writing or drawing his or her attention away from your writing? Could any multimedia content be added usefully?

3. Explain the “hook” you’re using to get your reader’s attention. Why is this hook attractive to your blog’s particular audience? How do you keep your audience’s attention after that initial hook?

4. Are the introductions consistent (all written in a similar voice, about the same length, etc.?)? If they are not consistent, which one(s) should serve as a model? What needs to be changed about the others?

Instructions for Creating Your Blog

ONE person in each group should complete these steps:

1. Go to www.blogger.com. If you have a blogger account or a gmail account, sign in with that; otherwise you’ll have to create an account.
2. From your blogger dashboard (http://www.blogger.com/home) click the link that says “Create a Blog” and follow the instructions.
3. You’ll need to specify a title for your blog (this can be changed later) and a URL address for your blog (this can be changed later). You’ll also need to choose a theme, but this can also be changed later.

Once you have created your blog, invite your other group members to become authors by following these steps:

1. From your dashboard, click on the “settings” link below your blog’s name (or, if you’re already in your blog’s control panel, click the “settings” tab)
2. Click the “permissions” link in the row below the tabs
3. Click the button that says “add authors.”
4. Enter your group members’ email addresses and click “Invite.”

Each group member will receive an email with instructions explaining how to sign up for the blog.
Once you have confirmed that everyone can access the blog, everyone in the group should re-read the post to make sure it is free from errors.

In-class Assignment Jan 19

Collaborate on a mission statement for your blog. Your statement should include the following information:

• A welcome message to the blog’s audience, including a specific description of the blog’s target audience
• A description of the tone you will seek to achieve in your blog
• A description of your blog’s subject matter (remember, you should design this so that you can fulfill all of this semester’s assignments)
• A general description of the blog’s authors (this is separate from the introductory post assignment and should not overlap with it)

This document should, like everything you post on your blog, attempt to fulfill the rhetorical goals that you will write about in this post. Take care to distribute the work evenly among all group members. Your final document should be polished and ready to post to your blog.
